When it comes to entertainment, we believe that the process is just as important as the product. That's why at a University Singers rehearsal, visitors are often struck by the amount of leadership development and creative teamwork that takes place within our cast.

We offer a completely customizable clinic/workshop package for young performers from middle school through high school. Below are a sampling of sessions offered. We encourage you to mix and match to build the ideal clinic for your group.

For questions and booking information, please email univsingers@bsu.edu. We look forward to working with your group!

In the Performance Workshop, students will take the stage to present a portion of their show. Dr. Carter and a panel of University Singers will provide constructive feedback on the performance. We like to stay away from cleaning choreography and fixing spacing in order to introduce loftier concepts that can be applied universally to an ensemble’s big-picture “bag of tricks.” This workshop is designed to strengthen individual and ensemble performance by introducing advanced concepts from the world of Live Entertainment.

This session provides practical experience with audition technique. Our dance captains will teach a brief choreography combination to participants “audition style.” Students will be coached to exhibit confidence and positive rehearsal technique (both important at any audition) while experiencing the pressure of a professional dance call simulation. Time permitting, a dialogue is opened for current cast members to discuss their first-hand audition experience for University Singers as well as for professional Live Entertainment positions at Bush Gardens, Paramount’s King’s Island, and Cedar Point.

Behind every good group is a great set of leaders. Especially at the high school level, this session can help define leadership roles for dance captains, section leaders, group presidents, secrateries, treasurers, tech crew chief, etc. Even if your ensemble doesn't have specific positions, we can help the veteran members understand the importance of their role in the cast. This session focuses on sharing the work load by setting boundaries and delegating specific tasks. Students who have an opportunity to serve as leaders take personal ownership and learn life skills like responsibility and trust. Whether you choose to involve your whole ensemble or a few veteran leaders, this workshop session will give your students the foundation of leadership.

There is life after high school! (And we’re living proof.) College 101 is a multimedia presentation including photographs, video footage, audio, and open discussion about what it’s like to perform in college. Sometimes we find ourselves answering questions about going to college and the topic of entertainment takes a back seat. We think that’s OK too! This session is all about making a connection with students as individuals. We listen to what they have to say and answer questions. Typically this lasts about 15-20 minutes.

In University Singers, we believe the key to a healthy ensemble is teamwork. The Leadership and Team Workshop will engage the students in leadership and team-building exercises that have the potential to turn an ensemble into a family. These sessions are tailored to individual groups of students and include an in-depth debriefing after each activity. A 30-minute block is ample time to complete three activities. Students will leave with a better understanding of how to work with one another, how to lead, and (perhaps most importantly) a realization of the importance of being a “follower.”
